Quick Answer: What Do British Tourists Need to Enter Hurghada?

British tourists visiting Hurghada, Egypt, normally need a full British Citizen passport valid for at least six months from their arrival date, with at least one blank page, plus an appropriate Egyptian tourist visa. Eligible visitors can apply for an Egyptian e-Visa before departure or obtain a tourist visa on arrival at an approved Egyptian airport.

The free entry permission available for certain short stays in South Sinai does not cover Hurghada. British travellers should also check current UK travel advice, any applicable health documentation and their airline’s requirements before departure.

Most important distinction: Hurghada is on Egypt’s Red Sea mainland, not in the South Sinai resort exemption area. A British tourist flying to Hurghada should not plan to enter using the free Sharm El Sheikh permission stamp.

Hurghada Entry Requirements for British Tourists: Why This Guide Matters

Hurghada is one of Egypt’s most popular Red Sea holiday destinations for British travellers seeking sunshine, beaches, snorkeling, diving, island excursions and relaxing resort stays. Many visitors fly directly from the United Kingdom, while others arrive through Cairo or connect from another destination.

Although planning a holiday is usually exciting, entry requirements can create uncertainty. Travellers often ask whether a British passport is enough, whether they need to apply for a visa before flying, how long their passport must remain valid and whether the immigration process at Hurghada Airport is complicated.

These are not minor details. A passport that fails to meet the entry requirements can disrupt a trip before it begins. Choosing the wrong visa option or misunderstanding the geographical limits of a visa exemption can also create difficulties.

This article focuses specifically on the real decisions British holidaymakers face when visiting Hurghada. It does not simply repeat a general list of Egyptian visa rules. Instead, it explains what those rules mean for common holiday scenarios, including family trips, short breaks, package holidays, connecting flights and visitors planning to travel beyond their resort.

The main guidance is written for people travelling on a full British Citizen passport from the UK. Different passport categories, nationalities and residency arrangements may be subject to different rules.

Hurghada Entry Requirements for British Tourists: Essential Checklist

Before booking flights or travelling to the airport, British visitors should check that their travel documents meet the requirements for entering Egypt.

PassportFull British Citizen passportCheck the document category and details
Passport expiryAt least six months after arrival in EgyptCalculate from your arrival date

The most common issue is misunderstanding passport validity. A passport may still be legally valid in the UK but fail Egypt’s six-month entry requirement.

It is also important to distinguish between a standard British Citizen passport and other British nationality or travel-document categories. Eligibility for a particular visa route should never be assumed simply because a document is described as British.

UK Passport Validity Rules for Entering Hurghada

According to the UK government’s Egypt entry guidance, a passport must have an expiry date at least six months after the date of arrival in Egypt. It must also contain at least one blank page.

How Does the Six-Month Passport Rule Work?

Imagine that you plan to arrive in Hurghada on 10 November. Your passport must have an expiry date at least six calendar months after that arrival date.

The relevant reference point is your arrival in Egypt, not simply the date when you leave the United Kingdom.

Travellers should allow for the possibility of itinerary changes and should renew a passport that does not meet the requirement rather than hoping an airline or immigration officer will make an exception.

Does My Passport Need Six Months After I Leave Egypt?

The current UK government wording specifies at least six months after the date you arrive in Egypt. Some travel companies may use simplified language in their booking guidance, so always verify the official rule and any additional requirements imposed by your travel provider.

What If My British Passport Expires in Five Months?

If your passport expires five months after your planned arrival, it does not meet the stated requirement. Renew it before travelling.

What If My Passport Is Damaged?

A damaged passport may cause difficulties even when its expiry date is acceptable. Check that your photograph, personal details, machine-readable information and physical pages are intact.

If you are unsure whether the passport is acceptable, contact HM Passport Office or your travel provider well before departure.

Do not risk being denied boarding. Airlines check travel documents before departure. A valid flight ticket or hotel booking does not override Egypt’s passport requirements.

UK Passport Renewal Information ↗

Do British Citizens Need a Visa for Hurghada, Egypt?

Yes. British Citizen passport holders travelling to Hurghada for a normal holiday generally need an Egyptian visa.

The usual tourist routes are applying for an e-Visa before departure or obtaining a visa on arrival at an approved Egyptian airport.

A visa is not automatically included just because you booked a package holiday. Some travel providers may offer assistance or specific arrangements, but you must confirm exactly what is included in your booking.

Does a Seven-Day Hurghada Holiday Require a Visa?

Normally, yes. The duration of a short holiday does not create a general visa exemption for Hurghada.

Does an All-Inclusive Hotel Booking Remove the Visa Requirement?

No. Staying inside an all-inclusive resort does not remove the usual visa requirement for British tourists entering Hurghada.

Do British Tourists Need a Different Visa for Cairo or Luxor Excursions?

Visitors should check that their visa covers their intended itinerary and length of stay. A standard tourist visa can generally support ordinary tourism beyond Hurghada, subject to its conditions and any restrictions applicable to particular regions.

The free South Sinai permission stamp is different because it has geographical and duration limits. It should not be confused with a standard Egyptian tourist visa.

How Long Can a Tourist Visa Last?

The UK government’s guidance states that visas on arrival are valid for stays of up to 30 days. Electronic visas have their own validity and entry conditions, which should be checked on the issued visa.

Do not confuse the period during which a visa can be used to enter Egypt with the maximum permitted length of each stay.

Egypt e-Visa vs Visa on Arrival: Which Is Better for British Tourists?

Both routes may be available to eligible British Citizen passport holders, but they offer different advantages.

FeatureEgypt e-VisaVisa on Arrival
When arrangedBefore departureAt an approved airport after arrival
Application methodOfficial government portalAirport visa kiosk or designated process
PlanningRequires advance applicationCan be suitable for eligible last-minute travellers
Document checksApplication information must match passportPassport and eligibility checked on arrival
Airport processPresent issued e-Visa as requiredObtain visa before immigration counters
Best suited toTravellers who prefer arranging documents in advanceEligible visitors who prefer the airport route
Important limitationApproval is not automaticAvailability and airport procedures must be confirmed

Why Choose an Egypt e-Visa?

An e-Visa allows you to complete the application process before travelling. This can be convenient for visitors who prefer to organise important documents in advance.

It may also reduce the need to complete the physical visa-purchase process after landing, although all travellers must still pass immigration checks.

Why Choose a Visa on Arrival?

An eligible British tourist may prefer obtaining the visa at an approved airport. This can be practical for some short-notice journeys.

However, airport procedures can involve queues, document checks and specific payment requirements.

Is the New Digital Visa on Arrival Available at Hurghada Airport?

The UK government describes a digital visa-on-arrival option introduced at Cairo International Airport from August 2026.

That announcement should not be interpreted as confirmation that the same digital process operates at Hurghada Airport.

For Hurghada, follow the current instructions published by the Egyptian authorities and your airline rather than relying on a procedure announced for a different airport.

Our practical recommendation: If you have enough time before departure, consider the official e-Visa route so you can organise your documentation in advance. If choosing visa on arrival, confirm your eligibility, the airport procedure and accepted payment method before travelling.

How to Apply for an Egypt e-Visa With a British Passport

The Egyptian government operates an official electronic visa portal. Travellers should use this portal rather than assuming that a commercial website is an official immigration service.

Step 1: Visit the Official Egypt e-Visa Portal

Open the Egyptian Ministry of Interior’s electronic visa website and review the eligibility and application instructions.

Official Egypt e-Visa Portal ↗

Step 2: Create an Account

The portal asks applicants to register using an email address and other required information. Use an email account you can access before and during your journey.

Step 3: Enter Your Passport Details Carefully

Complete the form using the information printed in your passport. Check spelling, passport number, nationality, dates and travel details.

Small mistakes can create problems, particularly when an application does not match the passport presented at immigration.

Step 4: Select the Appropriate Visa

Choose the visa type that matches your intended purpose and itinerary. Check the permitted number of entries and any relevant conditions before submitting the application.

Step 5: Submit the Application in Advance

The official Egyptian portal instructs applicants to create an e-Visa application at least seven days before departure.

This is a minimum application lead time stated by the portal, not a guarantee that every application will be approved within a particular number of days.

Step 6: Review Your Application Status

The portal sends updates about application processing. Check your email and account for the result.

Do not treat an application submission confirmation as proof that a visa has been issued.

Step 7: Keep the Issued Visa Accessible

Once approved, save the visa and follow the portal’s instructions for presenting it during travel.

Keeping a printed copy as well as an accessible electronic copy can be useful in case your phone battery runs low or connectivity is unavailable.

Important: An e-Visa does not guarantee admission to Egypt. Final entry decisions are made by the Egyptian immigration authorities.

What Happens When British Tourists Arrive at Hurghada International Airport?

Understanding the usual arrival sequence can make your first experience at Hurghada Airport more straightforward.

The precise layout, processing arrangements and queues may vary depending on your flight and current airport procedures.

1. Leave the Aircraft

Follow airport signs and staff directions toward arrivals and immigration.

2. Arrange the Visa if Needed

If you are eligible for visa on arrival and have not obtained an e-Visa, follow the approved airport visa procedure before immigration.

3. Complete Immigration Checks

Present your passport, visa and any additional documents requested by immigration officers.

4. Collect Your Luggage

After completing immigration, follow the signs to the appropriate baggage-collection area.

5. Pass Customs

Follow customs instructions and declare any items that require declaration under Egyptian rules.

6. Meet Your Transfer

Follow the meeting instructions provided by your hotel, tour operator or prearranged transfer company.

Do You Need to Buy a Visa From an Airport Agent?

The UK government’s guidance says that travellers do not need to purchase a visa from an airport agent. Eligible visitors using the physical visa-on-arrival route can follow the official airport kiosk procedure.

Be cautious of anyone suggesting that using a private agent is mandatory.

What Questions Might Immigration Officers Ask?

Officers may ask about your visit, accommodation, intended length of stay or onward travel plans.

Answer accurately and keep relevant booking information accessible if requested.

Can You Leave the Airport Without a Visa?

A traveller who requires a visa must satisfy the applicable immigration requirements before being admitted to Egypt.

Do not assume that being part of a tour group or having a hotel reservation creates an exemption.

Does the Free Sharm El Sheikh Visa Cover Hurghada?

No. This is one of the most important distinctions for British tourists planning a Red Sea holiday.

The UK government explains that eligible travellers arriving by air at Sharm El Sheikh may receive a free entry permission stamp when staying for less than 15 days in specified South Sinai resort areas, including Sharm El Sheikh, Dahab, Nuweiba and Taba.

Hurghada is not included in that geographical exemption.

Hurghada and Sharm El Sheikh Are Not the Same Visa Area

Both destinations are famous for Red Sea holidays, but they are located in different parts of Egypt.

Hurghada is on the western coast of the Red Sea, while Sharm El Sheikh is on the Sinai Peninsula.

The existence of a limited entry permission for certain South Sinai stays does not mean that all Egyptian beach resorts have the same exemption.

Holiday PlanDoes the Free South Sinai Permission Normally Cover It?
Short qualifying stay in Sharm El SheikhPotentially yes, subject to the official conditions
Seven nights in HurghadaNo
Two weeks at a Hurghada resortNo
Sharm El Sheikh followed by HurghadaNo, a suitable Egyptian visa is needed for travel beyond the exemption area
Sharm El Sheikh followed by CairoNo, the limited South Sinai permission is not sufficient
Common mistake: Do not assume that a free Sinai stamp allows you to fly to Hurghada, visit Cairo or travel throughout Egypt.

Egypt Entry Requirements for British Families, Children and Dual Nationals

Family holidays involve additional planning because every traveller must have appropriate documentation.

Do Children Need Their Own Passports?

Children travelling from the UK generally need their own valid passports. Parents should check the expiry date and condition of each child’s document individually.

Do Children Need an Egypt Visa?

Do not assume that a parent’s visa automatically covers a child. Check the current Egyptian application rules and the visa requirements for every traveller.

What If a Child Is Travelling With One Parent?

A child travelling with one parent, another relative or a guardian may be subject to additional document checks depending on the circumstances.

Carry appropriate evidence of parental responsibility or consent where relevant, and confirm any specific requirements with the airline and Egyptian authorities before departure.

What If Family Members Have Different Nationalities?

A British resident is not necessarily a British Citizen passport holder.

For example, a family living in Manchester may include members travelling on passports issued by different countries.

Each person’s visa eligibility must be checked according to the passport they will actually use, rather than their UK residence alone.

What About Dual British-Egyptian Nationals?

Dual nationals may face different entry and exit considerations. Check the rules applying to both nationalities and the documents required for each stage of the journey.

The UK government also advises that British citizens returning to the UK must carry a valid British passport or a certificate of entitlement.

Do All British Passport Categories Qualify for an e-Visa?

No. The UK government specifically states that British passport holders from British Overseas Territories and Crown Dependencies cannot apply online using the standard Egyptian e-Visa route.

If you hold a non-standard British travel document, seek advice from the Egyptian Consulate before making travel arrangements.

Travel Insurance, Medicines, Vaccinations and Egyptian Customs

Entry planning involves more than passports and visas. British travellers should also consider medical documentation, insurance and customs requirements.

Is Travel Insurance Required?

Even where a particular insurance policy is not listed as a universal tourist entry document, comprehensive travel insurance is strongly recommended.

Check that your policy covers your planned activities, relevant medical conditions, emergency treatment and any applicable travel-advice restrictions.

Are Vaccinations Required to Enter Egypt?

The UK government states that travellers arriving from countries with a yellow fever transmission risk may need a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate.

This is not a blanket requirement for every visitor flying directly from the UK.

However, your route and recent travel history may affect which health documents are needed.

Check the latest guidance from TravelHealthPro or an appropriate travel-health professional.

Can British Tourists Bring Prescription Medicines Into Egypt?

Some medicines may be subject to Egyptian restrictions or documentation requirements, particularly controlled substances.

Carry medicines in original packaging, keep copies of prescriptions and check the applicable regulations before travelling.

Do not assume that a medicine legally prescribed in the UK is automatically unrestricted in Egypt.

What Should You Know About Customs?

Egypt applies customs rules to certain goods, cash and electronic equipment. Travellers must declare items when required.

Rules can be updated, so review official customs information before departure if you are carrying unusually valuable equipment, large quantities of goods or restricted items.

What About Diving and Adventure Activities?

If you plan to scuba dive, join a desert safari or take part in other adventure activities, check that your travel insurance covers the specific activity.

Insurance exclusions can vary considerably between policies.

Useful preparation: Save your insurer’s emergency contact details and keep essential medication and documents accessible during your journey.

Official Egypt Health Advice ↗

Common Egypt Entry Mistakes British Tourists Should Avoid

Most entry problems can be reduced by checking documents carefully before leaving the UK.

Mistake 1: Counting Passport Validity Incorrectly

A passport expiring shortly after your holiday may still fail the six-month requirement measured from arrival.

Mistake 2: Assuming Hurghada Is Visa-Free

The limited South Sinai exemption does not apply to normal tourist entry into Hurghada.

Mistake 3: Applying Too Late

The official Egyptian e-Visa portal requires applications at least seven days before departure.

Mistake 4: Using an Unofficial Visa Website

Commercial sites can resemble government portals. Check the website address carefully before submitting personal information.

Mistake 5: Entering Incorrect Passport Details

Names, passport numbers and other details should match the travel document exactly.

Mistake 6: Confusing Visa Validity With Stay Duration

A visa’s validity window and the permitted period of stay are different concepts.

Mistake 7: Assuming Every British Passport Has the Same Eligibility

Different British nationality and travel-document categories may have different visa rules.

Mistake 8: Ignoring Changes to Travel Advice

Security advice, border procedures and visa arrangements can change. Recheck official guidance close to departure.

Real Travel Scenarios: Which Entry Documents Do You Need?

The following examples explain how the main rules affect common British holiday plans.

Scenario 1: A Couple Flying From London to Hurghada for Seven Nights

Both travellers hold full British Citizen passports with sufficient validity and blank pages.

They normally need an appropriate Egyptian tourist visa. They can consider applying for an e-Visa in advance or using the eligible visa-on-arrival route.

Scenario 2: A Family From Birmingham Staying at an All-Inclusive Resort

The family plans to remain at its hotel for most of the holiday.

The visa requirement still applies. An all-inclusive booking does not create an immigration exemption.

Parents should verify the passport and visa requirements for every family member.

Scenario 3: A Traveller Whose Passport Expires Five Months After Arrival

The passport does not satisfy the current six-month validity requirement.

The traveller should renew the passport before departure and ensure any visa application uses the correct new passport details.

Scenario 4: A Visitor Arriving in Sharm El Sheikh and Later Travelling to Hurghada

A free South Sinai permission stamp is not sufficient for travel beyond its permitted area.

The visitor needs an appropriate Egyptian visa before undertaking travel outside the exemption area.

Scenario 5: A British Tourist Arriving Through Cairo

The traveller should check the visa procedure at the actual airport of arrival.

The digital visa-on-arrival option described by the UK government for Cairo should not be confused with arrangements at Hurghada Airport.

Scenario 6: A UK Resident Travelling on a Non-British Passport

Living in the UK does not automatically provide the same Egyptian visa eligibility as holding a British Citizen passport.

The traveller must check the requirements associated with their own nationality and travel document.

Scenario 7: A British Visitor Planning to Stay Longer Than a Normal Holiday

A visitor intending to remain in Egypt beyond the period allowed by their visa must check the appropriate extension or residence procedures.

Do not assume that a tourist visa can be extended automatically or without visiting the relevant authorities.

What to Do if Your Visa Is Delayed or Your Passport Is Expiring

My e-Visa Application Is Still Pending

Check your account on the official Egyptian portal and review any messages about your application.

Do not assume that a pending application is equivalent to an approved visa.

If departure is approaching, seek guidance from the appropriate Egyptian authorities and your airline about your available options.

I Entered the Wrong Passport Number

Use the official portal’s support process to determine what action is required. Do not assume that an incorrect visa document will be accepted at the airport.

I Renewed My Passport After Applying

Check whether the issued visa remains valid for the new passport. A visa linked to an old passport may create difficulties.

Seek official advice rather than relying on informal online discussions.

I Have Already Arrived but Need to Stay Longer

The UK government states that visa extensions can be requested through Egyptian Passport and Immigration Offices.

Extensions are subject to the relevant rules and are not guaranteed.

What Happens if I Overstay My Visa?

Overstaying can lead to administrative problems, including possible penalties. The UK government’s guidance warns that overstays exceeding 14 days may result in a fine.

Resolve immigration questions with the relevant Egyptian authorities before your permission expires.

Who Can Confirm an Unusual Entry Situation?

For cases involving unusual passport categories, dual nationality, complex itineraries or uncertainty about eligibility, contact the Egyptian Consulate General in the UK.

The passport must expire at least six months after the date of arrival in Egypt and have at least one blank page.

No. A short holiday in Hurghada does not qualify for the limited South Sinai visa exemption.

Can I use the free Sharm El Sheikh stamp in Hurghada?

Yes. Staying entirely inside a Hurghada resort does not remove the normal Egyptian tourist visa requirement.

Can I travel from Hurghada to Luxor or Cairo?

Tourists holding an appropriate Egyptian visa can generally undertake ordinary sightseeing travel, subject to visa conditions and any applicable regional restrictions.

Can I bring prescription medicine from the UK?

Some medicines may be restricted or require documentation. Check Egyptian rules before departure and carry appropriate prescriptions and original packaging.

Final Pre-Departure Checklist for British Tourists Visiting Hurghada

Before leaving the UK, complete the following checks to reduce the risk of avoidable travel problems.

  • Confirm that your passport is a full British Citizen passport or check the rules for your actual document type.
  • Make sure your passport expires at least six months after your arrival in Egypt.
  • Check that your passport contains at least one blank page.
  • Choose an appropriate Egyptian tourist visa route.
  • Apply for an e-Visa sufficiently early if using the online option.
  • Check that all visa information matches your passport.
  • Review the requirements for every child travelling with you.
  • Check special rules for dual nationality or non-standard passports.
  • Confirm any applicable vaccination or medical documentation requirements.
  • Review your travel insurance and planned activities.
  • Check rules for restricted medicines and goods.
  • Save your accommodation and return-travel details.
  • Read the latest official UK travel advice shortly before departure.
  • Keep essential documents accessible during your journey.

The Final Answer

For most British holidaymakers, the essential Hurghada entry requirements are straightforward: a suitable British Citizen passport, at least six months of validity from arrival, a blank passport page and an appropriate Egyptian tourist visa.

However, the details matter. The free South Sinai entry permission does not cover Hurghada, an e-Visa application is not the same as an approval and the requirements for other British passport categories may differ.

By checking the official rules before departure, British tourists can focus on enjoying Hurghada rather than worrying about preventable travel-document problems.

Use this guide as a planning resource, but rely on the Egyptian authorities and official UK travel guidance for the rules that apply on your travel date.

If I could give 10 stars, I would in a heartbeat! I've booked trips and excursions in many countries, but I've rarely experienced such a high level of professionalism, honesty, and warmth. From the initial contact to the end of our vacation in Hurghada, we received impeccable service. No matter the time of day—morning, afternoon, or late at night—the team was always available, responded immediately, and took care of every little detail. You can tell from the very first moment that guest satisfaction is their top priority. Every single excursion was superbly organized. The ride in the luxury limousine, the transfers, the breathtaking yacht trip to the paradisiacal islands, and our unforgettable day trip to Cairo and the Pyramids of Giza were all perfectly planned. This allowed us to completely relax and enjoy our vacation. I was particularly touched by the surprise for my son's birthday. Such thoughtful gestures can't be bought. They demonstrate the heart, attention, and passion this team puts into their work. It's moments like these that transform a wonderful vacation into a memory for a lifetime. What impressed me most was the honesty, reliability, and transparency. No empty promises were made; every commitment was honored. Unfortunately, that's not always the case these days. A huge thank you to the entire team! You made our family vacation truly special. I will recommend you to anyone who wants to discover Hurghada, the Red Sea, the paradise islands, or Cairo. For me, you're not just worth five stars, but at least ten. Thank you so much for everything. We will definitely be back!

I booked a horse riding tour and I was happy with the condition of the horses as well as the expertise of the guide Said who came with me. I felt very safe throughout as a solo female. Mahmoud the driver was very reassuring and friendly. Hany the stable owner kindly gave me a tour of the horses as I wanted reassurance about their wellbeing. The horses are different breeds and are well taken care of.
